We had a bit of snow earlier this week, after a dry, cold spell that froze all the lakes and marshes enough that people were skating on them. Whenever it snows, I have to park the car at the end of the driveway. The driveway slopes down fairly steeply from the road to the house. If I parked the car near the house, I'd never be able to get it back up to the road again.

We are ignoring Christmas as much as possible. However, there is lots of socializing this time of year, and we enjoy that. We were at a "tea party" yesterday that was the social event of the year. There were lots of people there, some that we knew and some that we didn't.

Although it was a snack-y type of gathering rather than a meal, there was tons of food. And, even though the hosts are omnivores and there were the usual dead critters for people to eat, they had made several vegan items and, unasked, took the time to point them out to us. How cool is that? (Ha, I knew I could get a vegan angle into this post somehow!)

Tonight is the annual "Moonlight Madness" event. It is the one night of the year that shops on our little island say open for late shopping. The "downtown" area will be decorated with little tea light candles in paper bags lining the sidewalk. Very little actual shopping takes place, but it is a chance for everyone to hang out, meet the merchants and each other, sip punch and mulled apple cider, and generally have a good time.

At the annual Fire Department dinner last week, I was awarded the First Responder of the Year trophy. It is mostly a function of geography: I live close enough to the firehall that I am one of the first to arrive when there is a callout, so I get to go on most of the calls.

I hope all is well with everyone else.
