I am looking for some information on lac resin. I know it is made from insects and is used to coat food products. I bought a bag of "Apple Country New York State Apples" and on the bag was a statement that said their apples were "treated with food grade lac resin." I emailed the company to tell them of my disappointment and when they wrote back, they stated all these other products that contain lac resin that I never knew of like fruits, vegetables, chocolate and medicine pills like Advil. Not that I use all of those things, but it just makes me wonder. I knew some fruits and veggies are covered with wax that may or may not be be vegan, but how do you know? I wrote to the FDA to ask them if they could give me some info (does it have to be listed as an ingredient?) and suggest how I can avoid lac resin. I searched VegSource for any articles or info on lac resin and didn't find anything. I think this would make a good Q&A topic Jo? I looked in the archives and there wasn't anything about this. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
