Thanks Jo! It wasnt the dogs I was worried about - they are easy to please :) It was when I make pumpkin cookies and bars and bread. I bought the small "pie pumpkins" vs the carving type but the texture does seem thinner than processed, canned. I'll just give it a try. There isnt an alternative - there isnt any canned to be found around this area right now.
