Hi, Lisa. I would not keep any frozen vegetable beyond 6 months. Freezing just slows deterioration and nutrient loss; it does not prevent them. Freezer burn and texture would suffer as well. The main difference between canned and home-prepared pumpkin is that if you do not purchase the right type of pumpkin, your home-prepared product will be watery. The small pie pumpkins are the best (especially for pie, of course!), but if the dogs don't care if their pumpkin is watery, than it won't make any difference. Have fun with your new project! ~Jo
