Leslie, I spoke before in the heat of the moment. I stand by what I said, I spoke my beliefs, but I could have (and should have) softened my words.

I grew up on a farm and was in 4-H, buying into the whole thing as most farm kids do. And I think much of my anger comes from "going along," not understanding the whole picture at the time. So I'm angry for having participated. Still--although this was many years ago.

And this is the time of the year when our local paper is full of the county fair, the championship animals, and the auctions. There are pictures of the 4-H members and their winning animals, standing next to the car dealer (or whoever) who paid big bucks for the unsuspecting animal. It all seems so innocent, so wholesome.

I also understand being married to someone who does not share your veganism; I'm in the same boat. And like Jo, I especially like your question: does your choice require a victim? This is very thought-provoking.
