Jo, thank you for the compliment! I'm happy you had a chance to look at my work! Well, you know sometimes you look back on your life and see signs that were pointing you in a direction that you maybe just weren't ready for yet. When I really think about it there were LOTS of those signs! The whole "tradition" thing gets complicated and for sure a good number of tribal people and members of my family hunt, use leather and definitely eat meat and other dairy products. Actually, lots of the commodities that are given to Indians through various programs are meat, cheese, milk and so on. Some of my family on both the native and non-native side can't get with me being vegan. But, really the non-native family has had more of an adverse reaction to it now that I think about it! Never really thought of it that way. After all of those signposts I spoke of along the way the final one that led me to become a vegetarian was a friend coming over to my house who had just seen an animal in serious distress that had escaped from a local slaughterhouse. This friend just told me about it in no way trying to get me to go vegan, he was not vegetarian or vegan. Once I heard that story I knew that I could never be a meat eater again. I could no longer contribute to that side of human behavior. That was about ten years ago. Then about 5 years ago I realized that becoming vegan would just do so much more. It is really one of my proudest accomplishments. I LOVE being vegan!
