There are those of us who would literally not harm a fly, and there are those who do not put insect "pests" (particularly those that harbor diseases) into the same category as sentient animals. Technically speaking, vegans shouldn't kill insects. However, if it comes down to your life or theirs, disease, plague, or even a severe allergic reaction (as with a bee sting), the lines are not so clear. Not everything about veganism is black or white -- there are a lot of gray areas, and areas that each vegan must decide for her/himself. Personally, I thought the Obama incident was blown out of proportion, and as is so often typical of Peta, they made the rest of us look ridiculous. Let's worry about the men and woman being killed in wars (and the animal being killed in factory farms), instead of drawing attention to flies, which probably 99% of the citizenry disdains and couldn't care less about. That's my two cents. ~Jo
