Subject: Why Vegan?

The hotel receptionist asked me why I was a vegan. She said she has a friend who is in to all that "weird stuff." Though her motive was insincere, I liked her question. It forced me to verbalize the passion I am feeling for this life choice.

Why vegan? I want to create a one-line answer; an answer that captures the essence of Ahimsa...the essence of peace on earth for all sentient beings. I want to convey my heartfelt conviction that I am a person of value who possesses the inalienable right to choose my way of life. How can I say all that I feel in one concise sentence?

I am vegan because...
I value all of life.
I subscribe to the doctrine of Ahimsa.
I choose the sanctity of life above the poverty of greed.
it perfectly depicts my inmost passion for life.
I do not have the right to kill another sentient being for the sake of pleasure.

You and I know what these mean, but does any one of them effectively communicate why I am vegan? Let me see...I cannot tolerate the misery of others for the sake of pleasure; I cannot dismiss the urgency of the moment to provide assistance to those in need; I cannot fathom a nation who swears allegiance to God while seeing children die of want; I cannot understand why our nation allows for-profit companies to knowingly and willingly feed our children "food" that is compromised and dangerous to health; I cannot understand how God-fearing people can sit in ignorance while our nation ruthlessly annihilates billions of animals; I cannot understand why any of us would choose to allow others to perish, while within our collective will is the power to effect change.

All of life seeks life. And while nature is harsh, the living yearn to live. Simply, all of us need to help all of us if we are to survive.

Our children are being led down a path hewn out of the stone of history with the lies of powerful and greedy men. Men who care more about the rate of return than the state of health. May those who perpetrated this lie be brought to account for their wrongful actions.

Why am I a vegan? Because I understand the nature of life and have the power to choose life over death.

How about you?

Pat
