Subject: Please Help - Roaches!

Does any one know how to get rid of and prevent roaches?
I have never in my lifetime lived anywhere that had roaches. I thought maybe I brought them from a house that I was recently staying at, but I have seen 4 so far, so maybe not?!
I have been here for 5 years and this is the first time I have ever seen one ever. I have never even seen them outside? I didn't know they existed here.
I am confused. How did they even get in here? They are so big.
They have not been in food areas yet, knock on wood. I don't want them to get comfortable and find any. I know about ants. I know about mice, but roaches, oh my, it is a whole new freaky thing.
I am freaked out with the heebeegeebees. Seeing them has been few and far between, but I need to do something before it gets worse.
My place is clean, not spotless, but clean. I have even tried to be extra careful since I saw the first one. Sadly, I don't have a maid.
I took 3 outside and I saw one last night I couldn't catch.
Is there a kind way to get them to leave, without individual tossing :o)?
