It is SO not your fault. Give yourself a break. Death is so much a part of nature, that little squirrel had extra time because of you. We can't spend so much time thinking of the what-if's, I have had so many bad things happen to so many of my animals in the last couple of months I too have had to learn this lesson. One cat that got hit by a car, I'm pretty sure -- it's useless to think I should have kept her confined. Animals need to be free and that freedom entails some risk, nature is so unkind. A little neighbor's kitty at my frame shop that used to spend the days with me sleeping in the chair -- she was hit last week. I put her out just hours before that happened. I could have stressed over that and I'm sad to my core, I miss her so much, but there's just no use to thinking the what-if's.

My three babies (kitties) with feline leukemia, I keep thinking I could have protected them from that, but all we can really do is give love and protection when we can, we simply can't control the forces of the universe. You did something so compassionate and keep in mind squirrels are impossible to keep confined in a yard. There is simply no way you could do that except with a full fence and top over it to boot.

Your sadness is so understandable, and so familiar to me, everything touches me that way. Just remember it will pass and other animals will be lucky enough to cross paths with you and receive your love and compassion.
