I live in Ohio and use a rain barrel. I just drain it out in late fall and store it in my garage so it
won't crack from freezing. I have an adjustable downspout that I move over in the spring to let
the water run in the barrel. Then in the fall I just adjust it back into the downspout. I just had
to cut about a one foot section out of my downspout to make this work. I have heard that you
shouldn't really water food you are going to eat with rain barrel water cause your roof shingles
might have funky stuff in them, but I don't know if that is true. I often get this kind of gritty
stuff in my barrel screen that is from my garage roof. I love my rain barrel!
