We use two 55 gallon drums to collect rain water. Or at least we will when I finally get it finished this summer. They have lids on to prevent bugs from getting in, but the overflow can still flow out. One interesting note about collecting rainwater: The Utah state legislature was considering a bill this session to make collecting up to 2500 gallons of rain water LEGAL!! That's right, under current Utah law you can't store rainwater, since all water in Utah is controlled by the government and collecting massive amounts of rainwater could affect groundwater sources. The bill didn't become a law, so don't tell anyone about my collection system. "They can have my rain barrels when they pry them from my cold, dead hands!" (Actually the threat of a ticket would do it, too. But I doubt anyone in the history of the state been cited for collecting rainwater):)
