I haven't been to one in awhile, but most of the ones I ever went to the Chana Masala was safe. But, I know all restraunts are different. I can't think of anything in Chana Masala that other places would put in it, unless they used animal broth.
Chana Masala is a chickpea dish. I have been to a couple Indian restraunts where it seemed I was in Indian when it came to us understanding each other (part of why I don't go anymore.) It is hard even to get a native english speaker to understand the concept of no animals.
Hopefully that will help some if you go to a not so helpful Indian restraunt.
