In fact, it seems pretty natural to me to be fearful of being poked with sharp objects. So, it's
not like you shouldn't be afraid. So, if you are willing to accept the fear, maybe the question
is how to handle the feeling of fear, how to feel confident enough to take on the challenge.

I've heard that "courage is not the absence of fear but the understanding that other things
are more important."

First, bring you mind to focus on those other things, the reasons that you want to give
blood...

Secondly, BREATHE!

I don't like to be poked with needles either, but when I do I always focus on my breath. The
breath is steady and peaceful. Feel it grace the tips of your nostrils and enter your body
bringing with it good energy. As much as possible, focus on your breath. Let the doctor or
nurse take care of the rest. If there are complications, go back to your breath again and
again.

This will be easier to do if you make a practice of focusing on your breath--like a
meditation--when you are not getting your blood drawn.

Since you don't have to give blood right away, maybe spend some time practicing meditation
on the breath and getting more in touch with your motivation to give blood.
