In Reply to: how can I overcome my phobia of needles? posted by Tom ZeCat on March 10, 2009 at 10:20 pm:

I am not "afraid" of them, but I do faint easily.

I find that is it worse if I remain passive. If I try to be as active a participant as possible in the process, it helps. So, for example, it is better for me to watch the needle being inserted than to look away, and better to actively feel the pain than to try to ignore it.

On the other hand, if things go wrong, all bets are off. I was a blood donor for a while. Of the four occasions on which I gave blood, I passed out twice. One time, they couldn't get a decent flow rate from my vein, so it took forever. They had to come back several times and jimmy the needle around a lot. Zzzzz! The other time, they just had trouble finding the vein. Zzzzz! They said I turned a lovely shade of green! I eventually had to quit being a donor, as it was clear I wasn't cut out for that kind of thing.

Interestingly, while I will pass out watching a gory movie, being an emergency First Responder is no problem. Again, it has to do with the active / passive thing. If I have a job to do, I'm fine.
