Hi, it was wonderful to find this discussion group. I've been a vegan So the moral of that little anecdote is, you really CAN change people's As vegans go, I'm not the most anal in existence. I eat stuff with So there's me, or at least me insofar as I'm a vegan. Additionally, I'm

for going on 3 years now--my anniversary will be sometime this March. I
wasn't even vegetarian before I went vegan--I just went cold uh,
tofurkey(TM). Here's my vegan story: someone I knew had stopped by a
table at my college campus, where they were talking to people and
passing out literature. She told me about what animals have to go
through in the "food industry," and I was appalled. I already had
strong political and moral convictions, and so all it took was for me to
find out what was really going on. I stopped by myself and got some
literature. That night I went to a Mexican restaurant and ordered a
beef something-or-other, just out of non-vegetarian habit. And as I
was eating it, I was thinking...the next day I told my mom I was going
to go vegan, and it was rather a surprise to her!
minds and lives through outreach. Maybe you won't convert people as
easily as I was converted...I have always loved animals, and wanted
periodically throughout my childhood to go vegetarian, but these efforts
were quashed after my parents said it was "too hard" and made it sound
incredibly difficult. And as I said, I already had some strong
political and moral convictions, and was concerned about injustice and
the suffering of other beings. But outreach does really help. Most
people don't really know what happens in slaughterhouses and factory
farms. And there's no reason to expect they will know unless we tell
them. We all have this image in our minds from the media, childhood
storybooks, and so forth, of this idyllic farm life--a situation that's
pretty much nonexistant today in America.
refined sugar, and stuff that may be distantly animal in origin. I'll
eat honey if I "have" to (i.e. someone made me something and didn't know
that honey was not okay) but I really would rather not. I love insects!
