One asks the question, how can Scully do this?

I remind you all, Hitler liked police dogs. That didn't stop him from being a vicious, bigoted despot, and murderer of millions of innocent people. He was a madman.

People are not always consistent in their beliefs. They may do what is expedient, not what is right, if they can gain something personal in that process.
