You can’t please all of the people all of the time. Or in this case, just about any of the people! :-) Of course I’m not surprised this is a hot topic. To the person who expressed disgust that I did not share the details of my conversation with Matthew Scully: I would have preferred to share them, and I believe people would have had strong reactions to hearing them, as I did. But since Scully said our talk was ”on background" and off the record, I believe it would be unethical for me to publish his comments. I am disappointed that I can’t, and frankly I am disappointed in Scully’s reluctance to allow people to know them. But Scully is a politician, you can know his positions by what Palin says. Scully made clear to me that he has to make political calculations in living his life. Perhaps we all should make those calculations, but I’m not a politician. Unfortunately, this country seems to have become a place where people are only “allowed” to talk about politics with other people who agree with them. For those saying, “I am leaving your site now that I know who you are voting for,” a point I would make is that this is what I did not do to Matthew Scully. Having been deluged with emails from people in the veg and animal rights community, people upset about Scully and our hosting of his book’s website, I decided to post the above article to respond. Since I decided I didn’t want to dump Scully’s site about animal rights and veganism because I disagree with him politically, and since I didn’t want someone to interpret my leaving his site up as an endorsement of his political views, I chose to reveal who I’m voting for. One irony that strikes me: I made a choice not to get rid of someone’s veg website, which fits our mission of “promoting the many good reasons for a shift toward a plant based diet.” I did this despite the fact I disagree with that person’s public political advocacy. It’s interesting to see the number of people who disagree with me, but won’t afford me the same courtesy and respect which I afforded Matthew. I also want to say I am seeing a number of people posting here who make false assumptions about my position on different issues, issues which are not contained in my article. Rest assured I am just as concerned about justice, human life, and truth as anyone posting here. Thanks.
