Thanks for the response, Keith. Good call on the memory management problem. If I leave Firefox up for a few days, it will eventually fill swap (virtual memory) and Linux has no facility to expand swap as it is a disk partition created at install. I'm really kind of addicted to some of the extensions in Firefox that make my life easier, or I would switch to something else. So, for now, I'll just keep an eye on it and shut it down from time to time. As for the cpu at 100%, thanks for the info. I never thought about it that way. A long time ago I heard about a virus (around 1990 give or take) that would put your cpu into an endless loop and burn it up. Maybe that was just rumor, but it always kind of stuck in the back of my mind.
