I am 29 years old & I have been lacto-ovo for 15 years & have definitely been through many episodes of depression. I was actually trying to research to find if there really is a link between vegetarianism and depression. I am on Prozac now, but have such a sad, empty feeling, and total lack of self-esteem and desire for anything. I feel like I am not even myself anymore. This is a horrible way to live. I survived my one and only suicide attempt December 8, 2006. It must not have been my time to go. (I spent 3 days in the ICU, and was unconcious for more than 24 hours.) I am trying with all the strength I can muster to find out how to help myself. Through my readings, it seems that those B vitamins, especially B12, are what we vegetarians are missing out on. Also, folic acid and 5-HTP are helpful supplements. I am no doctor, but I am a sufferer of major depression, and am trying to fix my life now for those who love me. Please, if you can do anything to help yourself or someone you know get help for their depression, do it! I found an awesome supplement that I took for a couple of months this summer that helped me tremendously while I took it. It is called "EndFatigue Energy Revitalization (powder) & B-Complex (caps)" at www.endfatigue.com. I have been a vegetarian for so long, that I cannot possibly even force myself to put a piece of flesh in my mouth, or I would probably go back to eating meats, if only for the B-12! Outside of dealing with depression for much of my life since my mid-teens, I can say that in order for me to have any energy whatsoever, I have to stay on a multi-vitamin supplement that has high levels of those B Vitamins. I hope this helps!
