In Reply to: How do I get my non-vegetarian family to support my vegetarian lifestyle? posted by Jamie on January 8, 2006 at 4:34 pm:
I'm sorry I haven't checked this site in so long. Hit and miss I guess. :) I think as with all areas of life (food and communications with family being of utmost importance to me) we learn as we go. Sometimes we don't always say what we want to at first to convey such important messages as you have. I've learned that most people that surround you and love you just don't get it. They all want to be included in everything in the same way. It's hard for family to see that someone is doing something different than they are. No matter what your reason is, it seems as though you or we are telling them that what they are doing is wrong. We turn up weird because of changes we firmly believe in. I say, keep on keepin on. I totally agree with the previous poster that you should just start taking dishes you like and enjoy and not say a word about it. This way, as she mentioned also, you will have something to eat and something they can enjoy too. I would highly suggest you take familiar vegetarian dishes that they are familiar with. Such as corn, potatoes, green beans, whatever it is your family typically serves as a main or side vegetable. Let them glop on the butter, sour cream, etc. You just eat it plain with other veggies you take on top. Broccoli also. You will find that all will be well. And when continually asked why you eat this way. Think of a new answer like, "It just makes me feel better, or I like foods that make me feel good. I'm making New years resolutions to eat healthier so I can just feel good." Anyway, any other reason unless it is that you are deathly allergic will not even phase them. Believe me I know. After 12 years of trying to do the program myself, I am still working at it. I will still get questions, but I just tell them I like eating this way because I feel better. The conversations stop. Especially the heated ones. And we all get along terrifically. Is that a word> :)
