Being diagnosed with an IBD is not the end of the world.

I became a vegetarian at 14 and was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease (the most severe IBD) at 19. My symptoms were out of control for about 6 months until I made modifications in my diet and the medication took effect.

2 years ago I completed the transition to vegan as well. Basically what I'm saying don't try to second guess why it happened to you. They don't know what causes IBD. Like you I ate healthy and was very active. It's just a roll of the dice.

Today, I'm 30 and except for a few off days or weeks here and there my Crohn's has been in remission for the last 10 years. I consider myself one of the lucky ones because I know plenty of people with IBD who've had multiple surgeries and I put it down to my vegetarian/vegan diet for the last 16 years. So stay positive and know that it will get better.

The best advice I ever followed from the doctor (in the beginning), keep a food journal. It helps you figure out faster what triggers your attacks. Believe me the sooner you get rid of those, the less bland gross diet. lol For me it was garlic, onions, and green peppers.
