Praying that he is at peace is a good thing to do. However, pray for your own peace too.

You believe two different, contradictory things. On the one hand, you believe that your friend is at peace. On the other hand, you believe that he is a tortured ghost. It doesn't matter that one belief is founded on religion and the other is founded on popular mythology. The point is that you believe them both.

Believing two contradictory things is damaging to you. You need to resolve this one way or another, by deciding to accept one and reject the other. It is not for me to tell you which to accept and which to reject; you have to choose that for yourself. But, as long as you believe both of them, you are the one who is trapped and unable to move on.
