I'm not sure I agree with you about the author claiming that there's no politics in Christianity. I understood quite the opposite, that he was saying that the religion taught by Jesus (as opposed to the religion taught about Jesus) was intensely political: redistribution of wealth, empowering of the weak, etc. And that Nicene Christianity watered this down because it was too political for the powerful: it challenged them.

The message I thought the author was trying to convey was that our society has chosen its religion to suit its politics, where it should have chosen its politics to suit the teachings of its religion.
