I just look for the space between the inhale and exhale. I have done the opening/closing eyes before, and actually, that one might be good for you - it sounds like you are very "tied" to the physical world. That particular type of meditation is designed to help your mind understand that you are in the physical world, which you see with your eyes - but you also exist in a non-physical world, a world in which you can leave your stress, anxiety, grief behind. When you close your eyes, you can then open yourself to that other world.

I can understand your skepticism... I used to be, also, and then I began experiencing some amazing things. It seems to me that some part of you is asking for you to recognize that there is more going on than you are able to see with your eyes! That is to say, meditation, healing, spirituality, etc. have something to offer your life. (I don't know what that something is - it is different for everyone, but no less valid.) That is why you had a vision of the 3rd Eye. (Don't think of a vision strictly as something that comes in through the eyes - that's putting a very severe limitation on something that, frankly, is unlimited. Visions literally can take any form!) If I had to guess, I'd say one of the biggest potential benefits for you from meditating would be a sense of peace and quiet, and perhaps a sense of control over your own life. But that is only a guess! And I may be totally wrong!

Keep us posted - this could be quite a journey for you!
