"At the same time it is also not license for the slaughter of animals for "sport" or because they are unwanted, trample one's crops, or the like. All animals belong to God and while God may permit the slaughter of some for food, they are all God's creatures."

I also have always felt that it is not "wrong" to consume animals for food. When I first got to this website, I encountered many fundamentalist vegan zealots who do seem to have a definite contempt for anyone who needs to kill to survive. You know, not everyone has the luxury to be a pious vegan. In that light, of right or wrong.. it is just another form of materialism I think. So do no Christians ever kill flys that are in their home without a second thought, or put the raid out for the roaches or set traps for the mice... or swat mosquitos and then end up not eating the flys and the mice and the roaches. I find it hard to believe that many people would regard life so far that it would extend to an insect... this is all based on the view of themself as such a higher, superior form of life--- but all life has the same quality whether it be in the form of a human, a bug or a blade of grass. When we kill another human being, we see the hurt it causes through that person's family and so forth-- many people would wish death on someone they do not know, like from a foriegn country, with a disregard for that life. They will regard the lives of those they love as more valuable. Yet, war is still acceptable in the bible?
