If I remember the study referred to in the earilier posts, the researcher chose a small subset of an Asian population (specifically Japanese males exposed to high levels of radiation due to the 2 nuclear bombs dropped at the end of WWII). Since this population had significantly more thyroid populations than the general Japanese/Asian problems, an analysis was made of their diets, which were high in soy, but not higher than the representative population. The conlusion drawn by the researcher is that the high levels of soy contributed to the thyroid problems (we'll just forget about that whole ratiation issue & why X-Ray lab techs have to wear the leaded smocks & stand behind the leaded doors!) This is junk science and they only way it could get supported was to go to a private foundation, funded by the beef & dairy lobby (google is great!). It's actually on the level of that one study where the researcher whent to Africa to study the children in a village subsisting in beans & corn, less than 400 calories a day, added some meat to their diets, and they improved - and then concluded that a vegan diet is harmful (paid for by the American Cattlemen's Association). Of course, at that calorie level, she could have given them Life Savers and they would have gotten better! She also made no attempt to actually increase their calorie intake.

BTW, she came under cenure for her ethics in this research & faced possible criminal charges. You don't take children on starvation diets & experiment on them while maintaining the starvation level of the diet. But the Beef Association (among others) lobbied Congress and tacked a rider onto a bill that basically said that because the subjects weren't Americans, the ethics & standards related to human research subjects don't kick in.

Next note: sorry for the long post. Beware the GMO soy. Apparently, not only is the nutrition not stable, neither is the hormone content. It is possible that the hormones in GMO soy (used heavily in many of the meat analog products) can have similar unfortunate effects, similar to the growth hormones & antibiotics used produce meat & dairy.

I've said it before. Follow the money.
