The real issue here is the animal product centered western diet
which is the CAUSE of menopausal symptoms. In the mid 1980’s
studies began to suggest that an isoflavone in soybeans, genistein,
could be an effective weapon against many types of cancer. A
number of scientific studies conducted in China and Japan have
shown that frequent consumers of tofu and soymilk have a lower
cancer risk than those who rarely consume these foods.

I am not a fan of concentrated isoflavones. There is a
synergy at work in food that is lost when compounds are
manipulated in ways unique to the pharmaceutical laboratory.

Soy supplements are widely marketed as a "natural" way to
diminish the unpleasant side effects of menopause and other
health benefits. Isoflavones are phytoestrogens (plant estogens)
found in soy and in certain other plant foods, such
as flaxseeds, and garbanzo beans. Two of the primary soy
isoflavones, genistein and daidzein are found in many
supplements.

What troubles me is that the effect concentrated isoflavones have
on the body is unknown. Soyfoods have numerous well-
documented health benefits, however in my view, supplements
containing concentrated isoflavones are another matter.
