While Asian cultures have been eating soy and some soy products for hundreds of years, will no ill effects, they do not consume soy foods in the same manner as western soy consuming cultures do. Asian cultures typically eat soy beans, and tofu, but do not eat soy hot-dogs, and soy burgers, with soy cheese, and so on.
They consume soy in addition to meat, not as a replacement for meat, so while their consumption of tofu is large, it is very often eaten alongside fish and meats. It's is regarded as an additional protein source, not a replacement protein source.
They are not using heavily processed forms of soy (like all the hot dogs, burger, chesses etc) that are available in the US.
While soy is undoubtedly a healthy food, like anything moderation is key. if you love soy, try limiting your intake to fresh tofu and soybeans, but go lighter on the heavily processed soy items if you're concerned.
As people are being more responsible about healthy eating, more and more soy products are hitting the shelves. Most of these products were not available 10 years ago (i've been vegan for 15 years), and i don't believe that any adequate studies have been done to show the affects of heavy soy based diets yet.
