Personally (and I am not an expert in the field, just a vegetarian of 8 years who eats Soy a lot). I have a very hard time believing that these claims are substantial. Many of them have be launched by a group called the Weston A. Price Foundation (Try google searching the author of your quote to see if they are affiliated- I would be willing to bet money on it!)

Speaking as a scientist(or rather science student), its really important to consider the source of your information- especially with respect to health. I would tend to beg the question, has any research leading to these conclusions been published in a REPUTABLE scientific journal (not all journals are created equal). Has the study been reproduced with similar conclusions by an independent group? A good portion of our health information comes from very unscientific sources(like pop diet books, health food store pamphlets which sometimes are based on science and sometimes not, etc...). I would encourge you to speak with a nutritionist(I have done this with similar questions), look at positions taken by the American Medical Association ,the American Dietetic Association (which has an entire subgroup dedicated to vegetarianism), and other such organizations. Also, look at WebMD.com which usually has some good health information. I would also suggest not asking your local health food store unless they have some good credentials (our local health food store clerks are glorified sales people in my home town).
I have not looked into vegi-meats personally, but in looking up the evils of soy, personally- I have not found any reason to be convinced that I am going to die or throw my hormones out of whack by eating soy foods which have been an integral part of the diet of entire nations which boast a greater longevity than we do (the Japanese in particular).

Food is a huge industry, lots of money involved. The golden rule, it seems to me, is money => politics (read: money implies politics). If people have to do a little fear mongering to get people to buy their products then they will.

I don't buy the arguments against Soy personally- I think they are B.S.!

Thats my 2 cents worth!
