You should see the "crap" they feed the kids. I have a friend struggling right now because he and his family wanted to move "to the summit coutny country." They've got acreage and they got their house dirt cheap. Summit county houses in the city, they contended, were too expensive. Well, in the few years since they moved there, gas went up and they realized that two hours a day in the car (with the day starting at 5:30 a.m. to get the kids out of bed) is taking its toll. They live on a summit county real estate backcountry road (no paving) and maintenance goes by the wayside. Because of this, their cars are neglected and little repairs turn into major repairs. I tallied it up one day. If they paid a little more for a summit county house in the city, they would've saved on gas, auto repairs, and, most importantly, time. I realize some real estate in summit county people would rather live in the country or the city; however, living close to where you work has far more advantages than a view. I don't have a house yet, but plan to buy a small condo next year - a house just is too big for me. I plan on padding my budget with the idea that gas will go up, as will (naturally) other expenses. I remember something my dad taught me about cars (and it applies to almost anything). Buy for what you need vs. buy real estate in summit county for what you want. Sure, I'd love to have a big pickup truck, but realistically I'd only need it (for what it's intended for) a few days a year. In that case, I can just rent one.
