according to the ASPCA News Alert readers, earlier this year, the Burns Amendment undid legislation that protected these animals. This harmful legislation allows individuals and corporations to buy wild horses with the intention of slaughtering them for profit. Controversy over this amendment heated up late last month, when six wild horses were sold by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to a man claiming to be a minister; he planned to use the horses in a program for troubled youth. Three days later, the horses turned up at a slaughter plant in Illinois, where they were killed. A week later, 35 more wild horses were slaughtered, after the Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota traded 87 horses purchased from the BLM to a horse dealer. The dealer then sold them to the Cavel slaughter plant in Illinois. “These recent events prove our fear that if Congress doesn’t act, thousands of America’s wild horses will end up at slaughter unnecessarily,” said Ed Sayres, ASPCA President. “The fate of these horses is in our hands, and they deserve better.” BLM has temporarily suspended the sale of wild horses until it can reassess the program, but we ultimately need legislation that will put a stop to the sale once and for all.
