Women who are pregnant should not use Xanax because it has been known to cause birth defects. The drug also can pass through breast milk to nursing infants.

Alcohol
The anxiety drug heightens the effects of alcohol and should not be taken while drinking. It is sometimes used to treat alcohol withdrawal.
Balance

Side Effects
Side effects include loss of sex drive, drowsiness, fatigue, constipation and memory problems.
Dosage
Most prescriptions call for taking Xanax two to three times per day, although the medication is available in an extended release capsule that can be taken once a day.
