To Yvie: Good for you, and I agree. I was a vegetarian for three years back in the 80's, and there were people who found it alienating and wanted to be confrontational about it. I also didn't make the best nutritional choices. I was what Campbell and Esseltyn would call a "junk food vegetarian." It's no surprise that I gained weight, even though my cholesterol was low!
So, here I am in my 40's. I never had the slightest intention of going vegan, but I don't really enjoy meat. I gave up meat for Lent this year. The diet suited me, and I liked the way that I felt. A mostly-raw, mostly-vegan vegetarian friend prevailed upon me to read The China Study, and I haven't been able to eat meat since. Will I never have fish, meat, or dairy again? I dunno. One day at a time. All I know is that I feel better than I did in my 20's, weight is falling off of me, and I've lost my desire for my 6+ cup a day coffee habit. Long may it last, I say. So, when asked if I am vegan, I'm inclined to say that I'm a happy, imperfect vegetarian with severe vegan and raw-food tendencies. :-)
