I think they're vegan too, but he's avoiding that all-or-nothing category in order to draw in a wider audience. I do agree that it would be great if more people were even 90 to 95 percent vegetarian in their food choices, for the animals, for the environment, for their health (think the effect it would have on the medical industry!) but it may be too much to ask, especially initially. The only thing I'll say here is that the key word is "occasional," can you imagine what would happen if people simply traded off all their meat for fish, the oceans are already overfished and many species endangered. For me, I'll stick to the flaxseeds and other sources of omega 3's, certainly each to his own and kudos to anyone making progress in the plant-based direction.
