I don't think you need to be hermit, though. What interests do you have? I've found a few friendships through the kids, but most of my friendships don't have anything to do with kids or husbands. Books and checking out used book stores brought me together with one friend, the emergency responce stuff (CERT) with another, knitting with another, dog training with another, exercise (walking partners, mostly) with others... these are from some of my friends that don't have husbands or children.
You don't have to have the same world to be friends, just somewhere that the worlds overlap.
Only, don't stop with just one segment of your life, look for friends from the other segments.
