depending on where you are and how many people are involved, a simple outdoor cookout party or drinks/hors d'oevres party? Or you could give a dessert party. As you point out, you aren't kids. You aren't leaving your parents' homes for the first time and this is not about the joining of two clans or something. So a lot of traditional stuff just does not apply here. I'd leave a bit of time between the marriage ceremony and the party. You might prefer to give it as a housewarming - slash- wedding celebration. As for involving people as part of the party - no need, really. The whole tradition of bridesmaids was symbolic of leaving the maidenly state and girlhood to take up the task of wife/mother. At 40, nobody need keep up the pretense of girlishness. We're all grownups now. Nobody needs to wear a pink taffeta ruffled monstrosity with bows on their butts at our age. So, there is nothing for them to get offended about; have them just come to the party and celebrate with you.
