I'd leave a bit of time between the marriage ceremony and the party. You might prefer to give it as a housewarming - slash- wedding celebration.
As for involving people as part of the party - no need, really. The whole tradition of bridesmaids was symbolic of leaving the maidenly state and girlhood to take up the task of wife/mother. At 40, nobody need keep up the pretense of girlishness. We're all grownups now. Nobody needs to wear a pink taffeta ruffled monstrosity with bows on their butts at our age. So, there is nothing for them to get offended about; have them just come to the party and celebrate with you.
