Dr. Laura Schlessinger's book "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" does a pretty good job of conveying the difference. Although she does it by showing where marriages work like roommates instead of actually comparing marriage to living together. You probably (certainly?) won't like the book, but I think if you can suspend your feelings toward what Dr. Laura is saying in it, you will see the differences you are asking about.
