You have lived with him for four to five years now without commitment. It is just his and your routine.
You probably have a common-law marriage in most states... but is that what you want?
You didn't say how old you are and if you want to have children together or not.
It sounds like your boyfriend has no desire for commitment-- that you are the one who is asking for more.
I think you should listen to the part of you which doesn't want to settle. An endless string of days without a sense of unity-- of oneness-- when there is no commitment to speak of-- does not seem filled with much joy.
Respect prepares the way for real love... and maintains the love after that.
Are you sensing a "taken for grantedness" about yourself or about him?
These are good questions to think through and not shove down because of discomfort.
