Probably your friend's assessment of your children's behavior is probably more accurate than you would like... that he is seeing problematic attitudes and behavior from them that you are minimizing or not addressing effectively (yet). It can be very hard for some parents to objectively see their children.

There is a good book for parents by the author of Boundaries which goes through in good detail what is and is not reasonable and healthy for teens as consequences and what rules are important for them. The book has helped me with the teens I am in contact with each day.
