Thanks--this sounds good. While no one in my family ever kept strictly kosher, my grandma (and therefore my mother) tended to do traditional Jewish recipes just out of force of habit, so my taste memories of split pea soup do not include the taste of pork, and I can just dispense with the bakon bits.
