In most cases, it is best to drain the beans before using in chili, soups, etc. Save the drained liquid until the recipe is finished, though, because if the finished dish is a bit too thick, you can add a bit of that rather than just add water. NOTE: If you are concerned about sodium, then drain and rinse the beans before adding to the chili, and discard the liquid.
