Subject:         XPOST - diet for children?
Date: June 24, 2007 at 2:14 pm PST

we are reading 80/10/10 and as we are the parents of two young children (2 and 7 months), many questions arise as to the veracity of applying this diet to kids.

as is pointed out, protein is far more essential to children who ARE being built than to adults. 10% of calories for protein seems deficient for children. the meal plans listed look fine for adults but somewhat bereft of essential nutrients for children, such as omega-3s, fat, calcium and protein.

we have been vegan for 2 years (the entirety of our son's life), we do not vaccinate, i birth our babies at home, we are active and i am studying to be a naturopath with an emphasis on holistic nutrition, so we consider ourselves pretty well-informed about nutrition and lifestyle for children. we are planning to go raw ourselves and the 80/10/10 plan looks pretty easy to us, but we certainly do worry about applying it to our children.

if our children were exclusively breastfed, which is ideal for most of the first year with breastfeeding extended well beyond, we would not worry so much, but unfortunately i cannot breastfeed. we do get donated milk for our daughter, which are very lucky to have, but our son has not been on donated breastmilk for some time and we're not sure how much breastmilk our daughter will receive after she turns 1. so...how can this diet be applied to small children with growing bodies and brains that can be seriously affected by deficiencies? would we just dramatically increase our kids' consumption of fatty nuts and seeds to ensure that they receive the proper amount of fat (an essential nutrient for brain growth) and protein? would we supplement with flax and hemp to ensure proper intake of omega-3s?

our son is tremedously healthy now, vastly healthier than other children of his age, and we certainly don't wish to put his health in jeopardy for our own ideology. any ideas and tips as well as hard information would be very welcome.

(i posted this solely to the 80/10/10 group first, since these questions arose in the reading of that book, but i'd like some information from just regular raw-fooders as well, since we're not sure *how* we plan to go raw.)

thanks,
chandelle & jeremy (& isaiah & willow!)
