The main purpose of fasting is to remove toxemia. If we use water fasting to remove toxemia, (1) we also lose a substantial amount of lean body mass, (2) we experience more discomfort than is needed, and (3) we need to take just as much time to recuperate from the fast as it took to remove the toxemia. In contrast, juice fasting is just as effective at removing toxemia and juice fasting (1) provides our bodies with every nutrient that it needs to prevent the loss of lean body mass, (2) provides our bodies with the necessary Phase II cofactors so that the extremely toxic reactive intermediaries do not cause unnecessary pain and damage to our tissues, and (3) allows us to continue to live a normal life so that we can continue to work and we can continue to pay our bills and take care of our family responsibilities. According to Herbert Shelton, there are four main reasons to fast: 1) Weight Reduction 2) Physiological Compensation - "Energy saved in one department may be expended in another." 3) Physiological Rest - "This is rest of the digestive, glandular, circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems. In a general sense, the more food one eats, the more work must be performed by the organs making up these systems; when there is a great reduction in the amount of food taken, these organs rest. When no food is taken at all, they rest most of all." 4) Elimination of Waste Matter So as you can see, fasting does several things and one of the main things that it does is to conserve energy so that the body can use this energy to eliminate waste matter and heal. According to the Toxemia Theory of Disease, it is this uneliminate waste matter which is the root cause to most of our dis-eases. Water fasting means that we only consume water. During this time we are not consuming any nutrition and we HAVE to rest. After about 3 or 4 days of not eating, our body literally begins to eat itself, but our bodies are not dumb, "it never consumes its tissues indiscriminately." In "The Science and Fine Art of Fasting", Shelton writes, "Nature always favors the most vital organs. The fat disappears first, and then the other tissues in the reverse order of their usefulness. The essential tissues obtain their nourishment from the less essential, by enzymic action, a process which we studied under autolysis. ...Only in a very special sense does the body 'start to eat itself' when one begins to fast. It never consumes its tissues indiscriminately, but, true to its rule of always favoring its most vital organs, it uses up the least useful tissues first. Selective action is exercised from the beginning and the most rigid economy is exercised in appropriating its food reserves in sustaining the heart, lungs, brain, nerves and other vital organs." Of course, during the process of autolysis, our bodies will also cannibalize uneliminated waste matter. In contrast, juice fasting means that we only consume fresh fruit and vegetable juices. Juice fasting does not kick in autolysis, but who says we need autolysis in order for the body to eliminate waste matter and heal. Remember, one of the purposes of autolysis is to cannibalize uneliminated waste matter in our body, but let's not forget Shelton's second reason for fasting...2) Physiological Compensation - "Energy saved in one department may be expended in another." When we give our bodies a "solid food vacation" by only drinking freshly made fruit and vegetable juices, the energy that would have been used to convert the solid food into liquid is then redirected or rechanneled to the elimination cycle. Even though no solid food is going in, there will be massive amounts of uneliminated waste matter coming out of our intestines. Once our colon, which is our major channel of elimination, begins to free itself from its toxic load, then every cell in our bodies will start dumping out its accumulated waste matter into our system to be eliminated. Even though autolysis does not kick in during a juice fast, that does not mean that our bodies are not capable of digesting tumors by way of the parenteral system. In fact, our bodies defense system, mislabeled an immune system, has Macrophages , which are "big eating" white blood cells. Another big difference between juice fasting and water fasting is that juice fasting provides our bodies with the raw materials [phytonutrients, antioxidants, e.g. glutathione, etc.] to help our liver detoxify at an optimum capacity and the other nutrients we need so that our bodies do not rob Peter to pay Paul. In contrast, water fasting will deplete our reserves and will actually make our bodies rob Peter to pay Paul...as Shelton said, "The essential tissues obtain their nourishment from the less essential, by enzymic action, a process which we studied under autolysis." This is the reason why we need 30 days to recuperate from a 30 day water fast. Another huge difference between juice fasting and water fasting is that we have to take a vacation from life so to speak when we do a water fast. Unfortunately, most people do not have this luxury...most people have financial and family responsibilities that do not allow them to do a water fast even if they wanted to. It is also unfortunate that most people do not know anything about juice fasting or water fasting and most people are not willing to do either one of them even if they know about them. However, most people do know about juicing and will be a whole lot more receptive to the idea of juice fasting over water fasting, especially since they will have the energy to continue to work and take care of their families. Dr. Paavo Airola wrote, "Dr. Otto H. F. Buchinger, who has supervised more fast than any other doctor (over 80,000 fasts), employs only juice fasting. He told me that, in his experience, fasting on the fresh raw juices of fruits and vegetables, plus vegetable broths and herb teas, results in much faster recovery from diseases and more effective cleansing and rejuvenation of the tissues than does the traditional water fast." Airola continues, "Here is what Dr. Ragnar Berg, perhaps the world's greatest authority on nutrition and biochemistry, said about the superiority of juice fasting to water fasting: 'During fasting the body burns up and excretes huge amounts of accumulated wastes. We can help this cleansing process by drinking alkaline juices instead of water while fasting. I have supervised many fasts and made extensive tests of fasting patients, and I am convinced that drinking alkaline-forming fruit and vegetable juices, instead of water, during fasting will increase the healing effect of fasting. Elimination of uric acid and other inorganic acids will be accelerated. And sugars in juices will strengthen the heart...Juice fasting is, therefore, the best form of fasting.' " I have also heard Dr. Don Colbert speak recently about the benefits of juice fasting over water fasting, especially the role that glutathione has on the liver...Colbert says, "Juices actually supply the raw materials [phytonutrients, antioxidants, e.g. glutathione, etc.] to help the liver to enable it to detoxify at an optimum capacity." Btw, here's what Dr. Balch writes about glutathione, "Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that is produced in the liver. The largest stores of glutathione are found in the liver, where it detoxifies harmful compounds so that they can be excreted through the bile." 100 grams of watermelon has 25 milligrams of glutathione...the highest dietary source. Dr. Otto H. F. Buchinger, Dr. Ragnar Berg, Dr. Paavo Airola, and Dr. Don Colbert have worked with thousands of people and all of them agree from first hand experience with both water and juice fasting that Juice Fasting is superior to water fasting. The only practitioners who still advocate water fasting only are those who have little or NO experience with juice fasting. So does water fasting work? Of course it does, but at what price? We cannot function so that we can take care of our family responsibilities, we lose valuable muscle mass so that our metabolism is lowered, we experience needless discomfort, and we risk the damage from reactive intermediaries. Some people claim that juice fasting is enervating. Give me a break...water fasting is 10,000 times more enervating than juice fasting. Water fasting does NOT provide us with any energy nor does it provide us with the Phase II cofactors. Water fasting is so enervating that we have to take as much time to recuperate from the fast as we took to do the fast to begin with. Peace and Love........John
