Subject:         Yet another death associated with Graham's fasting retreats
Date: August 30, 2014 at 9:42 am PST

I posted this a while ago, but Graham or his minions deleted
it. Here it is again, with more detail this time.

Doug Graham
Costa Rica
Typically only 2 fasts per year. Sign up online. $4000 for
16 days. $10000 for 35 days. One women died there when she
bit her cheek. Her face swelled up. Her parents took her
to the hospital against the advice of Doug and she died
probably from injections or something. I don't know the
whole story, this is what I remember from someone who was
there. This wasn't the only incident. Rave reviews from
everyone I've talked to including the guy who saw this
tragedy. Expensive though.

I saw this posted in the GITMR archives. I hope it's okay
to post here. Just hoping someone could comment on validity
of the situation(s)...

Ive interned at Doug's fasting retreat and learned so much,
so much. I cant rate it enough.

People fast for different reasons and being a fasting
supervisor is not something Id like to do. It holds so much
responsibility. I have a hard time dealing with peeps that
arent eating 10g of carbs per kg of bodyweight per day! :)

My housemate fasted at home last year and died. I was in
Thailand at the time. She didnt drink enough water and got
admitted to hospital and put on life support. Renal failure
ensued.

Fasts are often uneventful but when things go down, you want
the best around. Doug's supervised thousands and gives the
lifestyle info so people can live proper and avoid having to
fast over and over cos the keep undereating and going back
to gunk n junk and needing to 'fast it off'.

It's a good idea to NOT spread rumors.
No one died.
This entire incident happened AFTER her 16-day fast had
ended, during the refeeding time.
A woman got an infection from biting her cheek.
I had asked the several times if she had done so, because
she had puffiness in her cheek, but she insisted that she
had not.
I contacted doctors, and actually brought two doctors out to
visit her, one an MD, and the other a dentist.
The dentist found the problem, (then the woman said, "Oh
yes, I DID bite my cheek,") and gave her meds.
They didn't do the job, so my wife took her to the best
hospital in Costa Rica.
My wife and the woman walked in to the hospital together,
each under their own power.
The hospital is totally modern, almost futuristic.
My wife explained to the staff that the woman had been
fasting, so she was extremely vulnerable to drugs.
She requested that they give her child's dose of
medications.
You know how medical doctors can be, they don't like being
told how to do their job.
They gave her a sedative while she was in the hospital, and
she stopped breathing for a few minutes, resulting in her
going into a coma.
I called the woman's parents, and suggested that they come
to Costa Rica.
I met with them, and stayed in touch with them.

I honestly believe I did all the right things, in all the
ways, in the right timing.
If such a situation were to come up again, I am honestly not
sure what I would do differently.

I know of no other incidents. Care to be more specific?
Spreading rumors is never good, for anyone.

Thanks, Harley, for being the voice of reason.
So sorry to hear about your housemate.
I always emphasize that qualified supervision is essential
when fasting.
