Hey Concerned for a Family Member,

Here are some of my notes from “Depression-Free for Life” and this is one of the main reasons why I recommended Cousens’ book:

The Web of Cause and Effect p. 79

“Here are the ten major factors of your personal biochemistry that can help you personalize your depression-busting program. p. 79

1. a deficiency in the neurotransmitter/brain chemicals serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, glutamine, GABA, or endorphins p. 80
2. use of prescription, over-the-counter, and recreational drugs
3. underlying ailments, nutritional deficiencies, and allergies to foods, chemicals, and metals
4. seasonal/melatonin imbalance
5. gender-related factors
6. blood-sugar imbalance/fast oxidizer
7. blood-sugar imbalance/slow oxidizer
8. thyroid deficiency
9. stress hormone imbalance
10. dietary fat/essential fatty acid imbalance p. 80

Highlights of the Five-Step Program for Specific Biochemical Imbalances p. 238

“In the first part of this book I identified seven types [see ten major factors on p. 79] of often ignored biochemical imbalances or bodily conditions that can cause or contribute to your depression:

1. an imbalance in various natural brain chemicals, especially a deficiency in serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, glutamine, GABA, or the endorphins
2. underlying conditions, especially side effects from prescription, over-the-counter, and recreational drugs; the consequences of nutritional deficiencies; and allergies to foods, chemicals, and metals
3. gender and seasonal-related factors, which may be complicated by an imbalance in melatonin or other hormones
4. a blood sugar imbalance, which can be expressed differently depending upon whether you are a fast or slow oxidizer
5. a thyroid imbalance, usually from a deficiency but sometimes from an overabundance of thyroid hormone activity
6. a stress hormone imbalance
7. a dietary fat/essential fatty acid imbalance” p. 239

JR Insert: The difference between the 7 types of biochemical imbalances on page 239 and the 10 major factors of your personal biochemistry on page 79 are #1) 2. use of prescription, over-the-counter, and recreational drugs; #2) 4. seasonal/melatonin imbalance; and #3) Gabriel shows both types of blood-sugar imbalances - 6. blood-sugar imbalance/fast oxidizer & 7. blood-sugar imbalance/slow oxidizer.

As you can see, Cousens has done something I’ve never seen anyone else do when it comes to depression and that is list more than one cause other than the obvious lifestyle factors like sunshine, exercise and sleep, for example. Unfortunately, Cousens is like most doctors who switch from conventional medicine to holistic medicine and that is they switch from prescribing drugs to prescribing supplements.

However, there is a time and place for supplements and depression just might be one of them. I would NEVER start out with the supplements, but when removing the primary causes does NOT work or does NOT work fast enough, we have to know how to support our body because we cannot change everything overnight.

I also agree with Harley as far as the diet and I would not follow Cousens’ approach unless the cause has to do with a blood sugar imbalance or an essential fatty acid imbalance and that’s another reason why I like Cousens’ book because it comes with a questionnaire to help you determine what the cause might be. For example, Dr. Cousens has some studies where people have alleviated their depression alone by taking some flax in their diet for several months.

So it’s not always as simple as just eat more carbs as some people might think. In fact, the biggest mistake that most people make, especially Natural Hygienists, is that they think that there is no way you can Screw Up the Law of Cause & Effect. But there is a way to Screw Up the Law of Cause & Effect and I doubt very seriously that any of them even know what they are doing to Screw It Up!
