Subject:         Doug - Dental implant concerns
Date: August 6, 2014 at 10:53 am PST

A childhood accident involving a tooth of mine led to decay years later and ultimately to loss of the tooth. My dentist has suggested an implant but insists that I take an antibiotic prior to, during and following the initial procedure which would amount to a seven- or ten-day course. My reluctance, not to mention concerns about the potential for toxic effects from materials used, are weighing heavily in my decision in favor of not going through with it.
I'm sensitive and don't want to suffer ill effects. The same tooth became badly infected before it was extracted and the dentist required I do a round of antibiotics, without which he would not have treated me. I acquiesced out of fear but suffered side effects and I aborted the course.

Doug, what is your view on antibiotic usage in a situation like this? Is the medical community's fear overblown? Is there an effective and safe alternative? Would it be too risky to not take either antibiotics or a less toxic substitute?
