Anything you can eat and not die from could be considered part of the "fringe" of the human diet. Fruits and vegetables are best for us. Other stuff can be entertaining, and enjoyable, and certainly edible. If you want to eat some seaweed now and then, go ahead. There are questions about it's health value, starting with the salt. There are questions about seaweed's "veganness," about the B12, about the fact that being filter feeders they pick up the toxins from the water they are in, and other issues.
