Hi there,
What would they be superior in? If they're being
touted as superfoods, the idea of superfoods doesn't
play out when we consider our natural diet. Foods
high in some nutrients are consequently low in
others, and the ideal nutritional balance to meet
our needs is obtained from fruits and leafy greens
without preference for one particular green over any
other.
I'd be careful about nutritional advice that
suggests one particular food is THE BEST within its
food group. We know that a variety of foods is good
for us over the long term, and that we can thrive
equally well eating spinach and celery for years as
opposed to eating lettuce and cabbage. Sunflower
seeds can't provide something essential that is only
in sunflower seeds. Who's touting that it does
anyway? They may have an interest in sales of
sunflower seed products that goes beyond mere zest
to see people make healthy decisions.
I'd question the line of thought that says any one
vegetable or other plant food is superior to every
other. Sure, bananas are great, but they don't have
as much water or vitamin C as oranges do... see what
I mean? We can go in circles analysing individual
nutrients and trying to ascertain which single food
comes closest to meeting our nutrient needs. And
then, if that food is decided upon, what happens
when certain people respond poorly to that single
food, due to an allergy, digestive upset or the
like?
So no single food within its food group is essential
for us to have, or is to be preferred purely from a
nutritional standpoint...
But in terms of taste and texture, it could be a
different story. :)

Luke
