Janice, please do try orthotics. I do get a bit
evangelical about them as they totally transformed my
ability to do cardio workouts (upright as opposed to
biking etc).

"Trapped with the energy to fly" is exactly how I felt
some 20 years ago. After just 4-5 years as a studio
instructor, I was ready to give up on impact work
which I love due to increasing pain in my lower back
and trapezius. Some instructors would take
painkillers, have massages, osteopathy etc; I too
tried the manipulative therapies on and off over the

Then I saw an ad for orthotics; I had never heard of
them. It made perfect sense to knock myself back into
alignment from the floor up. After quite a few visits
to get things right, I was sorted; no pain since.

I am aware your problems are far more extensive than
mine, no way would orthotics be enough. But, they are
an inexpensive option compared to a course of chiro-
type treatments and worth trying. As your other
therapies and possible surgery make changes, they will
naturally need adjusting.
